Alex, Monero is listed on all of the major exchanges (bittrex, poloniex, kraken, binance, etc.). The non-exchange options like shapeshift or changelly make it possible without doing this, as mentioned above. It's none of my business, of course, but do some research before buying into a new coin (I wouldn't take advice from CNBC although I like Monero and own a few coins). There are a lot of privacy-focused coins out there now that have a variety of pros/cons. Here is a non-exhaustive list of coins that have varying degrees of privacy built in...

The landscape changed a lot: several large centralized exchanges delisted XMR in 2024–2025, so the "deposit BTC, trade the BTC/XMR pair, withdraw" path simply doesn't exist for many users anymore. The working alternatives:
No-account swap services
are the shortest path for someone who already holds BTC. The mechanics: select BTC → XMR, paste your own Monero receiving address, send BTC to the generated deposit address. Non-custodial means no account, no balance held on your behalf — the output goes straight to an address you control. Compare the
final
amount you'll receive rather than the headline rate (network fees come out of it), note whether the rate is fixed or floating, and do a small test swap on any service you haven't used before.
Atomic swaps (BTC↔XMR)
are the protocol-level answer: trustless, no intermediary, no accounts possible by design (UnstoppableSwap is the current reference implementation). The cost is technical overhead and finding liquidity, so it's better suited to people comfortable running swap software.
P2P (Bisq, RetoSwap/Haveno)
gives you decentralized escrow trading with arbitration. Most private option in terms of counterparty trust, but slower and typically pricier than an instant swap.
One thing worth understanding clearly: converting BTC to XMR moves value from a transparent ledger to a private one, but the BTC
deposit
into any swap is still visible on the Bitcoin blockchain. That's why "no account, no profile" matters as much as the coin you end up in — a service that keeps no user profile has less data to leak.
Disclosure: I built
usdprivacy.com
, a no-account swap service that routes swaps through Monero — relevant to the first option above. Walkthrough of the actual flow here:
